Can Your Makeup REALLY Cause Cancer?

Did you know that up to 60% of beauty products we use on our skin go into our bloodstream? It’s a scary yet blatant fact that makeup companies downplay from the consumer. Studies show that continued usage of products that contain parabens, or cancer causing agents, leads to an increased risk of skin aging, weight gain, and even breast cancer. Parabens are used as preservatives in makeup but can be detrimental to ones health over an extended period of usage. Of course, it is difficult to give up brands we love that have our favorite shade of eye shadow or limited edition lip-gloss- and I’m not asking you to do that! All I want to do is inform you on something you may not know and be more conscious about what you are putting into your body. Hopefully, this article will prompt you to be more aware of what you are purchasing the next time you make a stop at the beauty counter. Here are just a few things to look out for when purchasing makeup.

1.) Knowledge is power- Do your homework! Before making a purchase, investigate brands that contain and are free of parabens. That way, you can make a more informed decision.

2.) Speak up! Some brands don’t disclose the ingredients to the consumer unless asked. So next time you are at the cosmetics counter, ask the sales associate for a list of the ingredients of the product you are purchasing.

3.) All that glitters isn’t gold-Organic and all-natural may appeal to you when making a purchase because you think you are getting the best all-natural product. However, this does not necessarily mean paraben-free.

4.) Check your product labels for these terms: Methylparaben, Ethylparaben, Propylparaben, Butylparaben, Benzyl-parahydroxybenzoic acid, Methyl-parahydroxybenzoic acid, Ethyl-parahydroxybenzoic acid, Propyl-parahydroxybenzoic acid, Butyl-parahydroxybenzoic acid, Parahydroxybenzoic acid and Parahydroxybenzoate. They are all forms of parabens. (Credit, contributor)

5.) A few brands of makeup that are paraben-free-Jane Iredale (I love this brand!), Tarte, Physicians Formula, Cargo, LORAC, and Smashbox.

Did anyone know about parabens in makeup before reading this article?

What makeup brands do you use? Are there any ones you use that are paraben-free? Comment below and I will tell you if your makeup contains parabens. Please be specific as to what product you use and from what brand.
